October 8 – Unchanging

Oct 8, 2023 | Bible Study 2023

I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love.  With unfailing love, I have drawn you to myself.  Jeremiah 31:3

Jesus Tells Us; I love you with an everlasting love.  It has no beginning and no end.  And it never changes.  It is impossible for you to completely understand My Love.  You tend to see Me and My feelings the same way as you see your own.  Your feelings change.  Friends come and go.  Anger can make you feel less love for someone, while happiness can make you feel more.  And in the back of your mind, you wonder if I am that way too.  I am not.  There is nothing you can do that will change My Love for you.  If you mess up, I am sad but I don’t love you less.  If you do something wonderful for Me, I am happy but I don’t love you more.  My Love is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  And it’s bigger and deeper than you could ever imagine!

Jesus Concludes; So, let Me love you, always.

Jeremiah 31:3; Exodus 15:13; Hebrews 13:8; Study Notes

Footnotes Jeremiah 31:3; God reaches toward his people with kindness motivated by deep and everlasting love.  He is eager to do the best for them if they will only let him.  After many words of warning about sin, this reminder of God’s magnificent love gave them a breath of fresh air.  Rather than thinking of God with dread, look carefully and see him lovingly drawing us toward himself.

Passage Exodus 15:13; In your unfailing love, you will lead the people you have redeemed.  In your strength, you will guide them to your holy dwelling.

Footnotes Exodus 15:1-18; Music played an important part in Israel’s worship and celebration.  Singing was an expression of love and thanks, and it was a creative way to pass down oral traditions.  Some way this song of Moses is the oldest recorded song in the world.  It was a festive epic poem celebrating God’s victory, lifting the hearts and voices of the people outward and upward.  After having been delivered from great danger, they sang with joy!  Psalms and hymns can be great ways to express relief, praise, and thanks when you have been through trouble.

Passage Hebrews 13:8; Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Footnotes Hebrews 13:8; Though human leaders have much to offer, we must keep our eyes on Christ, our ultimate leader.  Unlike any merely human leader, he will never change.  Christ has been and will be the same forever.  In a changing world, we can trust our unchanging Lord.

THE WORLD…we see history

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, SINGLEHANDEDLY REVOLUTIONIZED THE FIELD OF NURSING 1820-1910

This was a woman to whom much was given and not much expected, beyond marrying well.  But she gave the world much in return, caring for the sick and sparking reforms in health care.  Named after the Tuscan city of her birth, Florence Nightingale was raised amid stupendous luxury at her family’s estate in England, Embley Park.  It was there, as she was nearing her 17th birthday, that Florence, a Christian Universalist, heard a voice calling her to service.  Over the next few years, with God’s help, Nightingale sorted out what service she might contribute and how she might distinguish herself from her indolent mother and older sister, Parthenope.  In spite of her mother’s dismay at her choice of career, Florence, in 1844, began visiting hospitals and studying methods of training, she enrolled in a program in Kaiserswerth in Prussia.

She worked briefly for a Sisters of Mercy hospital outside Paris, then became the unpaid administrator of the Institution for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in London.  It was during the Crimean War, that her fame was cemented.  After reports came back to England about the horrible conditions being face by wounded and sick soldiers, Nightingale volunteered to go to Turkey, and she inspired others to join her, on October 21, 1854, she led a group of 38 women nurses she had trained to the war zone.  From then until 1856, she headed the nursing efforts in British military hospitals in the Crimean towns of Scutari and Balaklava, and although death rates dropped in this period, how much of that might e attributable to Nightingale’s lobbying for better nutrition and supplies is contested.  What is certain, is that she was an inspiration to her colleagues and patients, and after an account of her work in The Times of London depicted the “ministering angel” tirelessly “making her solitary rounds” all through the night, she was given the nickname The Lady with the Lamp.  Back home after the war, she founded the Nightingale School and Home for training nurses at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London.  She wrote the rules and elevate3d her profession, indeed, she made it into a respected career choice, and is considered the founder of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale singlehandedly revolutionized the field of nursing, a mission that began with a call to God’s service at the age of 17.

Nightingale felt that genuine religion should manifest in active care and love for others.  She would sometimes comfort those in her care with this view. For example, a dying young prostitute being tended by Nightingale was concerned she was going to hell and said to her “Pray God, that you may never be in the despair I am in at this time”. The nurse replied “Oh, my girl, are you not now more merciful than the God, you think you are going to? Yet the real God is far more merciful than any human creature ever was or can ever imagine.
