October 30 – The Bells of Heaven

I am the good shepherd…My sheep know my voice, and I know them.
John 10:14 (Life Application Study Bible)

Jesus Tells Us… I am with you, I am with you, I am with you. The bells of heaven continually ring out this promise.  Some people never hear it, because they are so busy listening to the noise of this world.  Others hear it only once or twice in their whole lives – in rare moments when they seek Me first.  But I want My sheep-My children-to hear My promise all the time, because I am their ever-present Shepherd.  To hear Me, you must be still and quiet.  Go to your room, outside to a favorite swing, or anywhere you can be quiet and still.  And then listen as I speak to your heart.  The more you practice stillness, the easier it becomes.  Little by little, you’ll learn to carry that stillness with you everywhere.

Jesus Concludes… When you go out into the noisy world, listen carefully so you can hear those glorious bells.  I am with you, I am with you, I am with you.

John 10:14; Jeremiah 29:12-13; John 10:28

Footnotes John 10:11-12 A hired had tends the sheep for money, while the Shepherd does it out of love. The shepherd owns the sheep and is completely devoted to them. Jesus is not merely doing a job or performing a duty, he loves us and has even laid down his life for us. False teachers and false prophets do not have this commitment.

Passage Jeremiah 29:12-13 12Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Footnotes Jeremiah 29:12-14 God did not forget his people, even though they were captives in Babylon. He planned to give them a new beginning with a new purpose, to turn them into new people. In times of deep trouble, you may feel as though God has forgotten you. But God may be preparing you, as he did the people of Judah, for a new beginning with him at the center.

Passage John 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Footnotes John 10:28-29 Just as a shepherd protects his sheep, Jesus protects his people from eternal harm. While believers can expect to suffer on earth, Satan cannot harm their souls or take away their eternal life with God. There are many reasons to be afraid here on earth, because this is the devil’s domain. But if you choose to follow Jesus, he will give you everlasting safety.

THE WORLD…we see history

George Washington

GEORGE WASHINGTON 1732–1799 NATIONAL ARCHIVES

The general, a large man (six foot three and a half) who cut a fine figure on a horse, was regarded as one of the best equestrians in the land. He was an example of a man who could change the course of world events through the exercise of his strong moral character, as a savvy player of politics and a principled man of war. George Washington both commanded and influenced other men, and thereby wrote history. It has been said that he was the indispensable man of the American Revolution, and that is apt.

The WORD…we see Jesus, His Story!

Could a democracy have been born without a leader who so embodied democratic principles? A planter’s son from Virginia, Washington joined the military early and was a most impressive soldier during the French and Indian War. Struck by four bullets, he survived, and he was unharmed when two horses were shot out from under him. Just as importantly, Washington was a man of philosophy, noting on the eve of revolution: “The crisis is arrived when we must with courage, he refused to seize power in the nascent nation: Instead, he resigned his military commission and won the top job in the United States’ first presidential election.

King George III of England marveled that Washington sought no recompense in terms of money or power for what he had done: “If true, then he is the greatest man in the world.” He may have been; he was certainly a different kind of man. America agreed, embracing its singular hero and reelecting him. No one else better embodied what the nation hoped to become.
