God can do anything! Luke 1:37 (Life Application Study Bible)

Jesus Tells Us…I am the mighty, all-powerful God.  Nothing is too difficult for Me.  Yet, I choose to work through you, with all your weaknesses and struggles, to carry out My plans.  In fact, it is because you have weaknesses, that you are able to receive My Power.  Your struggles teach you to depend on Me.  Don’t be afraid if I ask you to do something that seems too difficult.  Count on Me to give you all the help you need.  If I ask you to refuse to do something that is wrong, I will give you courage.  If I ask you to help someone, I will give you the time and energy.  If I ask you to share your faith with a friend, I will give you the words to say.  Don’t try to figure things out all by yourself.

Jesus Concludes…Remember that I am with you, and depend on Me to help you.  I can do everything, and I can use you to do what I ask for.

Luke 1:37; 2-Corinthians 12:9 Study Notes

Footnotes Luke 1:38, A young, unmarried girl who became pregnant risked disaster.  Unless the father of the child agreed to marry her, she would probably remain unmarried for life.  If her own father rejected her, she could be forced into begging or prostitution in order to earn her living.  And Mary, with her story about becoming pregnant by the Holy Spirit, risked being considered crazy as well.  Still Mary said, despite the possible risks, “May your word to me be fulfilled.”  When Mary said that, she didn’t know about the tremendous opportunity she would have.  She only knew that God was asking her to serve him, and she willingly obeyed.  Don’t wait to see the bottom line before offering your life to God.  Offer yourself willingly, even when the outcome seems unclear or even disastrous.

Passage 2-Corinthians 12:9, But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

Footnotes 2-Corinthians 12:9, Although God did not remove Paul’s physical affliction, he promised to demonstrate his power in Paul.  The fact that God displays his power through our weaknesses should give us courage and hope.  As we recognize our limitations, we will depend more on God for our effectiveness, rather than on our own energy, effort, or talent.  Our limitations and weaknesses not only help develop Christian character, but also deepen our worship, because in admitting them, we affirm God’s strength.

THE WORLD…we see history

Winston Churchill

The Critical alliance: Churchill has reason
To smile as he has convinced Roosevelt
That the Axis must be stopped.

Addressing the British Parliament in June 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill sought to prepare his nation for a possible invasion by Nazi Germany without casting doubt on victory.  It was a difficult speech to deliver, and Churchill executed it with eloquence: “I have, myself, full confidence, that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary, alone.”  Whether he did have that full confidence or whether England could have ridden out the storm of World War II alone, will never be known for certain.  What is known, is that no other figure on the world stage stood up so steadfastly against Adolph Hitler and so inspired the Allies to fight back.  In the late 1800’s, Churchill served in the British army as a cavalry officer, captured by Boers in South Africa in 1899, he escaped and was lionized.  He entered Parliament in 1901 at age 26 and served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 to 1915, then again in 1939 and 40.  He was a fierce foe of fascism and, as an opponent of the appeasement of Hitler, was chosen to replace Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain seven months after Great Britain entered World War II.

The WORD…we see Jesus, His Story!

Churchill may have expressed to Parliament a confidence that England could go it alone, but he perhaps most changed world history by accepting the communist Soviet Union as an ally, and by courting U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and lobbying for him to enter the fray.  He addressed the U.S. Congress, and in 1941 met Roosevelt at sea and forged the pivotal Atlantic Charter, which stressed the unity of the two nations and set out a vision for the post-war world.  Initially, material support flowed Britain’s way, and then on December 7, 1941, Japan, Hitler’s Axis partner, attacked the American Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii.  Churchill knew what this meant, and said to himself, “So we had won after all” that would take more time, but it would prove to be the case.
