January 2nd – Choose Me

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are getting worried and upset about too many things. Only one thing is important. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will never be taken away from her.”
—Luke 10:41–42 (ICB)

Jesus reminds us You are so very busy. But I want you to stop for a minute. Put down the game, hang up the phone, turn off the computer. Spend some time with Me.
Even now your thoughts are racing ahead to today’s plans and problems. But put those thoughts and worries aside. Just think about Me and how much I love you. I know exactly what is going to happen in your life today. Don’t worry. I will give you everything you need to face your day. Please don’t skimp on our time together. The computer and the telephone and the homework will still be there when our time is through.

Jesus concludes… Choose me first, and the blessings that I give you will not be taken away

Psalm 105:4; Luke 10:39-42

Footnotes Luke 10:38-42 Mary and Martha both loved Jesus. On this occasion they were both serving him, but they had different ways of showing their love. Are you so busy doing things for Jesus that you’re not spending any time with him? Jesus did not blame Martha for being concerned about household duties. He was only asking her to set correct priorities. Service to Jesus can degenerate into mere busywork that is totally devoid of devotion to God.

Passage Psalm 105:4 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.

Footnotes Psalm 105:4-5 If God seems far away, persist in your search for him.  God rewards those who sincerely look for him (Hebrews 11:6).  Jesus promised, “ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).  The writer of this psalm suggested a valuable way to find God-become familiar with the way he has helped his people in the past.  The Bible records the history of God’s people.  In searching its pages, we will discover a loving God who is waiting for us to find him.

Passage Luke 10:39-42 She had a sister called Mary who sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.  She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself?  Tell her to help me!”

Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed-or indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.

The Bible is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; when it burns low, our culture grows dark. The best way to keep America strong is to know her history, to honor her roots, to preserve her legacy, and to cherish the eternal God who, in His providence, placed this continent between two shimmering seas, and who, in His goodness, provided a Book that became her moral and intellectual foundation: the Holy Bible.
