August 27 – Autopilot

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105
(Life Application Study Bible)

Jesus Tells Us; Sometimes you can get into a rut, doing the same things day after day.  Your brain goes on autopilot, and you don’t even think about what you’re doing.  Letting your brain go on autopilot is an invitation for the devil to slip into the pilot’s seat.  Before you know it, he’ll have you pointed in completely the wrong direction, with lots of terrible detours and trouble along the way.  Kick the devil out of the pilot’s seat, and put Me in it.  Focus your thoughts on Me, and I’ll set you back on the right course.  The next time you feel your brain slipping into autopilot, reach for Me and My Word.

Jesus Concludes; Let me put the sparkle of adventure back into your days, lighting up your path.

Psalm 119:105; Psalm 63:7-8 Study Notes

Footnotes Psalm 119:105; To walk safely in the woods at night, we need a light for protection, so we don’t trip over tree roots, or fall into holes.  In this life, we walk through a dark forest of evil.  But the Bible can be our light to show us the way ahead so we won’t stumble as we walk.  It reveals the entangling roots of false values and philosophies.  We need a light to reach our desired destination.  Study the Bible so you will be able to see your way clearly enough to stay on the right path.

Passage Psalm 63:7-8; 7Because you are my help I sing in the shadow of your wings.  8i cling to you, your right hand upholds me.

Footnotes Psalm 63:6; During his sleepless, uncomfortable nights, David thought about God.  He reviewed all the ways God had already helped him, and he greeted the next day with songs of praise.  There are many reasons we can’t sleep, illness, stress, anxiety, but sleepless nights can be turned into quiet times of reflection and worship.  Use them to review how God has guided and helped you.  Recalling examples of God’s faithfulness to you can bring peace and rest.

THE FAILURE OF THE HIERARCHY (CHURCH) BY DEACON JACK SULLIVAN

CARDINAL O’MALLEY URGES CHURCH TO EMBRACE HIERARCHIACAL ACCOUNTABILITY Source: Sojourners. (link at bottom)

It is important to note at this point, and by way of mitigation, to say that the laity’s failure is by no means solitary or exclusive!  Much of the blame must also be shared with the hierarchy of the Church!  Can we really blame the laity for its failure to practice evangelization to the nations as Jesus commanded, when the hierarchy has also failed in its responsibility to help the laity to recognize their responsibilities in this regard, and to engage and encourage and train the laity to perform this important task?  Therefore, the hierarchy of the Church must also share in the laity’s failure in its duty of evangelization, because the hierarchy again, has completely misunderstood, and mismanaged its responsibility to prepare and guide the laity to perform this vital function!  So, to this extent, the laity’s failure may be somewhat excused!  It has always been the obligation of the Hierarchy to first acknowledge the laity’s singular duty for Evangelization and then train and equip it to perform this vital function.  The Hierarchy has also failed not only in its duty to both acknowledge the laity’s role in spreading the faith, but also to establish appropriate programs and strategies to help prepare, equip, and train them for this important work.  These measures should be performed at the parish level by the priests, as unfortunately, these reasonable lay alternatives have not been implemented perhaps because of the Hierarchy’s reluctance to surrender control, or perhaps because of their failure to trust their lay counterparts.  This condition could be the result of the Hierarchy’s mind-set that the lay faithful could never be spiritually equipped to assist or even replace some of it.

Again, it would appear that our Church leadership feels that the laity is not sufficiently competent to help lead the Church in her apostolic and managerial efforts.  To counter this mind-set of mistrust on the part of the Hierarchy, permit me to again draw upon Sacred Scripture.  Didn’t our Blessed Lord see fit to call upon a rag-tag band of ignorant and itinerant fishermen to lead His infant Church on earth in the vital task of preserving God’s revelation and bringing salvation to all humanity?  Didn’t He also appoint Peter, perhaps the most hapless of men, to serve as the “rock upon which I will build my Church?”  shouldn’t our Church leadership re-examine the immense possibilities of administrative assistance and renewal that the laity could bring to our Holy Church, and the role of the Holy Spirit to accomplish the same?  Recall the passage in MT. 16:21, “It was not you who chose me, it was I who chose you.” “Now therefore, go forth into the whole world, teach them to carry out all that I have commanded you, and know that I am always with you, even to the end of time.”
